Galmudug rules out any talks with ASWJ after securing Guriel control

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The regional state of Galmudug has ruled out holding any talks with the armed Ahlu Sunna Sufi group, saying it has previously opposed such negotiations in principle.

The mayor of Dhusamareb city Abdirahman Ali Mohamed said during a TV interview on Saturday night, ASWJ is fighting for a power-share in Galmudug that is “unacceptable” as it comes against the state’s will.

“They [ASWJ] tell the people that Galmudug will engage in a political dialogue with them to end the conflict. This is untrue. No one will sit down with the Sufi sect as long as they are eager for power,” he said.

For his part, a member of the outgoing Somali parliament Mahad Salad said ASWJ left Guriel city at the request of the local business community, rejecting claims that Galmudug extended an olive branch to them.

The leader of ASWJ Sheikh Mohamed Shakir told the media last night that they are hoping to start talks with Galmudug to resolve their grievances and the differences that led to the bloody hostilities.

Galmudug leader Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoor-Qoor is reported to be ready for negotiations with the group leaders and it is unclear if he will allow them to hold public offices in the state or parliamentary seats.

After retreating from Guriel days ago, ASWJ set up a base in Bohol, a key village located just 35Km north of Galmudug state capital, Dhusamareb, and that there is a fear the group could attack the city if the expected talks flopped.

The three-day battle in Guriel last week has left at least 30 dead, including top military officials and civilians. The local authorities said thousands of people fled their houses to outside areas.
