Galmudug sets date for election of remaining two Senate seats

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia - Galmudug has set November 13 as the election day to pick the remaining two Senate seats that culminates a five-month process to elect 54 new senators. 

According to a schedule released by the Galmudug Electoral Commission [SEIT] on Wednesday, four candidates will run for the seats which are part of 8 members allocated to the state.

These two seats will be the last of the 54 seats in the Upper House election, with all other four Somali Federal states concluding the voting exercise by their regional parliaments. 

Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoor Qoor on Tuesday night announced the candidates' list which saw the exclusion of his predecessor Ahmed Dualle Gelle Haaf due to fallout.

The four candidates are; Abdi Hassan Awale Qeybdid will contest against Awil Nur Ali, and Abdi Osman and Mahad Aden Guled vying for the second seat.

Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said on Tuesday he asked the leaders of the regional states to accelerate the election of the Lower House and complete in December.

Roble added that he will soon visit the polling stations in the regions to monitor the process. The election commissions have so managed to start the Somaliland election, selecting two seats.
