Hassan Sheikh elected as Somalia’s president for the 2nd time 

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Hassan Sheikh has become the second president of Somalia with 214 votes, after winning a landslide victory in the presidential election held in a heavily secured Mogadishu airport.

The election was contested by 36 candidates, with Hassan Sheikh and Farmajo advanced to the third round after no candidate garnered 220 votes in the second round to win the race.

During the election, 328 lawmakers of the 329-seat parliament cast their votes among the dozens of the candidates, including sitting leader Farmajo, ex-presidents Hassan Sheikh and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

Hassan Sheikh has served as the president of Somalia from 2012-to 2017 and handed over the power smoothly to Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who won the Feb. 8 election.
