MOGADISHU, Somalia – Armed Al-Shabaab fighters launched an attack against an intelligence base in southern Somalia as the country faces a severe drought and election crisis.

Jubaland confirmed the raid on its spy agency camp in the border town on Saturday night, says an officer was killed and several others sustained wounds throughout the battle.

The Al-Qaeda-linked group claimed it overrun the base and seized weapons from Jubaland intelligence. The residents reported heavy explosions and sustained gunfire during the attack.

The region is hit by a drought that uprooted thousands of people from the rural and urban areas with authorities in Gedo province reporting deaths of five due to lack of water and food.

Al-Shabaab which has been waging an insurgency since 2008 wants to oust the UN-backed Somali government and expel AU troops protecting it in Mogadishu.

On Saturday evening, a bomber killed the director of Radio Mogadishu, the mouthpiece channel of the government in the capital. His death sent shock waves across the nation.

Abdiaziz Afrika was known for his reports critical to Al-Shabaab and served as the producer of the SNTV's Gungaar program, which focuses on counter-terrorism and the group's ideology.
