MANDERA, Kenya - A heavy fighting has broken out in Mandera County near the Somali border on Sunday morning between Kenyan forces and Al-Shabaab militants.
The fighting came after Al-Shabaab reportedly launched a roadside bomb attack on a Kenyan military vehicle traveling on the road between Tagabo and Banisa areas.
Residents said they heard heavy heavy explosions followed by gunfire said to be targeting Kenyan military vehicles that sometimes conducted operations along the Somali border.
Al-Shabaab claimed its fighters killed 13 Kenyan officers, in the attack, which becomes the latest in series of cross-border raids on the Horn of Africa country.
Kenyan military officials in the North Eastern Province so far have not yet commented on the assault, but sources say KDF forces were deployed in the area to beef up the security.
