MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabaab has faced series of defeats in the ongoing battle against Somali National Army [SNA] along with Galmudug Darwish soldiers in the Mudug region after losing strategic areas.

Somali State Media reported that as many as nearly 200 members of the group have been killed and several others wounded by the allied forces in different locations, including Qay'ad and Amara since Saturday.

"More than 200 Al-Shabab militants were killed, 16 bases have been destroyed, 4 towns and 8 villages liberated during a three-week anti-terrorism operation," the state media reported.

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Galmudug state security minister who is among the officials leading the anti-al-Shabaab offensive said they have seized 20 guns, ammunition, and communion equipment from Al-Shabaab on Monday after taking control of Amara.

Gen Bihi, the Somali army's infantry commander, and sacked Mogadishu police boss Sadak John are at the forefront of the fight against Al-Shabaab in the province which links the south to the north.

There has been a surge in violence in central Somalia as Somali armed forces have intensified their offensive against the Al-Qaeda-allied militants and captured several districts, including Ba'adweyne, Qay'ad, Amara, and the surrounding areas.
