Jubaland lauded for becoming first state to hold Senate election 

Somalia has missed three deadlines for its parliamentary and presidential elections due to the dispute over the poll process as Somaliland and Gedo issues still remained unresolved.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali PM Mohamed Hussein Roble has commended Jubaland for unveiling its Senate candidates list and the timetable for their election, the first state in the country.

A statement released by the office of the PM urged the remaining Federal States – Puntland, Galmudug, HirShabelle, and Southwest to follow Jubaland's move and speed up the process.

The president of Jubaland state Ahmed Madobe has released the list of 4 candidates out of the eight seats allocated to it in Somalia's upper house of parliament which consists of 54 members.

The nine candidates who will run for four of Jubaland's eight seats in the Senate are:

1- Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartag and Ahmed Mohamed Jama.
2- Halimo Jama Mohamed and Abdirizak Mohamed Osman
3- Ilyas Badal Gaboose, Mohamed Ahmed Sayid, and Sharmarke Mohamed Abdi
4- Ibrahim Yaqub Ismail and Iftin Hassan Iman.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Jubaland Regional Electoral Commission said the election will take place on Thursday, July 29th in the southern port city of Kismayo, Lower Juba region.

The statement said that today is the announcement of the candidates, while tomorrow the 28th of the month is the day to receive applications and registration of the candidates.
