The deadly gun battle broke out after Al-shabab rebels launched an ambush offensive on Somali and Kenyan forces traveling between El-Adde and Garbaharay districts in Gedo region, sparking face-to-face combat with both sides used heavy machine-guns and mortars.

Witnesses who spoke to Keydmedia Somali via phone on condition of anonymity for security reasons said that 20 combatants from both warring sides were killed and 15 others wounded some of them seriously.

During the fighting Kenyan Jets bombed a base run by the al-Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab rebels, destroying more Al-shabab battlewagons and weapons at El-Adde area in Gedo region, residents and officials said.

“First we saw two jets flying towards El-adde town, and after minutes we heard the thunder of the bombs. The jets bombed, flew past, returned to the same spot and dropped several other bombs,” said a resident.

Kenya has illegally and in a hostile way sent troops with tanks into anarchic Somalia in last October after raids and kidnappings it blamed on Al Shabaab rebels linked with AlQaeda, but the advance has slowed and regional insecurity is no better.
