NAIROBI, Kenya – The newly appointed Somalia’s Intelligence chief Mahad Salad is in Nairobi for talks with his Kenyan counterpart on the counter-terrorism in his country.

KON has learned that Salad has been holding meetings with high-level officials on the execution of the deal signed between Somalia and Kenya, mainly the security matter.

Somalia under Hassan Sheikh's leadership eyes closer cooperation with Kenya on security and intelligence to defeat Al-Shabaab, a big potent threat to East Africa.

Mahad Salad who leads the US-funded National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] is making efforts to enhance ties with other spy agencies in Kenya and Ethiopia.

This comes after five years of strained relations with neighbors that resulted from Farmajo’s failed foreign policy towards the long allies of Somalia, including the UAE.

The new president Hassan Sheikh traveled to Nairobi last Friday and met with his counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta which led to an 11-pointed deal on trade and aviation.

The new agreement allows Kenya to resume Miraa exports after a two-year ban and the flag bearer Kenyan airways to begin direct flights to Mogadishu in the coming weeks.

The pact comes amid claims that the Kenyan army continued indiscriminate airstrikes in Somalia’s Gedo region that left dozens of unarmed civilians, including children dead.

Kenyan forces are part of the AU mission [ATMIS, formerly AMISOM], and they are operating within Jubaland, which is controlled by Ahmed Madobe, a staunch Naironi ally in Somalia.
