No casualties as a cargo plane crashes in Somalia

DOLOW, Somalia - A C-160 plane, which was chartered by WFP, caught fire in Dolow district in Somalia’s southwestern Gedo region on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The small plane registered EY-360 took off from Mogadishu, the Somali capital early in the morning carrying life-saving aid supplies meant to help the drought-hit population in the border province.

There were no casualties resulting from the plane crash. Authorities said the crew is safe and they were investigating the incident which halted airport operations as all flights have been canceled.

In May 2020, Ethiopian troops at Berdale town in the Bay region have shot down a Kenyan plane carrying humanitarian and medical supplies from the UN, killing all six people on board.

In July last year, an aircraft from Djibouti carrying humanitarian aid burst into flames at a Beledweyne city airport in central Somalia, causing no casualties.

Security at airports in Somalia is not good with most airplanes operating in the country’s sky, are old aircraft that were banned from the world due to lack of safety.
