According to local witnesses the fighting broke out shortly after Al shabab agents armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and small rifles attacked several military positions located around the town of Afmadow in Lower Jubba region that are manned by  Somali and Kenyan troops.

“The allied troops forces managed to ward off an attack by Al shabab fighters on bases near Afmadow town. At least 8 militants lost their lives and one was captured in a life during the combat,” said a TFG military official on condition of anonymity because he was authorized to speak to the Media.

For his side, an Al shabab commander claimed victory over the attack, saying his fighters briefly took over the area and killed many Somali and Kenya soldiers in their attack.

Afmadow town fell to Somali and Kenyan army peacefully last month after leaving Al shabab fighters from the city.
