Opposition calls for dialogue to an end to Guriel battle

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The union of the opposition presidential candidates issued a joint statement on the current situation in Galmudug state, particularly the hostilities in Guriel city that left 30 people dead.

The Candidates have called for an immediate ceasefire and open dialogue to bring an end to the fighting between Somali troops and the Ahlu Sunna militia that entered for the third consecutive day on Monday.

They have voiced regret over the loss of life, injuries, and displacement of many Somalis from the central town during and before the war began on Saturday after Somali troops attacked the Sufi group fighters.

According to the statement, the central government in Mogadishu has been urged to stop transporting troops to Galmudug and take part in the bloody battle in Guriel which was under the ASWJ since Oct 1.

“The Federal Government of Somalia must stop the troop deployment and play its part in ending the conflict, bringing peace and stability to Galmudug,” reads the statement in part.

In addition, the opposition asked all parties in the conflict to avoid anything that may inflame the war, and the existing dispute that led to the bloodshed should be resolved at the negotiating table.
