In pictures: Al shabab rebels dig defensive positions inside Kismayu airport

KISMAYU, Somalia (Keydmedia)- Al-Shabab militants-affiliated with Al Qaeda have on Sunday began, setting up new defensive positions, including digging trenches and placing snipers atop tall buildings of Somalia’s southern port town of Kismayu after changing its name, Keydmedia reports.

The rebels gave the airport the name of Ahmed Gurei, a former Somali veteran colonial-fighter by changing from its well-known first name Kismayu international airport

Certain local residents expressed decry upon the unrespectable rule of the militants controlling the seaside town of Kismayu, just 500 Km south of Mogadishu

The town of Kismayu is currently serving as a top revenue stream for Al-Shabab, which taxes the local merchants after losing Bakara market in Somalia capital, Mogadishu following a military pressure from TFG and AMISOM forces.

The U.S. says Al-Shabab is harbouring Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists in Kismayu town who are being accused of blowing up the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
