President Hassan Sheikh arrives in Galmudug after Baidoa visit

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia - A high-level delegation led by the new president arrived in the Galmudug capital Dhusamareb on Thursday, flying from Baidoa, Southwest where he stayed for two days.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was elected on the 15th of last month, is making his first trip to the capitals of the country's regional administrations to assess the drought situation in the Horn of Africa country.

On Wednesday, he has appealed for urgent and life-saving aid after meeting with IDPs at makeshift camps outside Baidoa city, 250Km southwest of Mogadishu, the country's capital.

The delegation will hold talks with Galmudug state leader Ahmed Abdi Karie [Qoor-Qoor], local elders, and members of the civil society to hear their concerns, needs, and advice to his leadership.

During his election campaign, Mohamud promised Somalia peace with itself and with the world, a welcome vision that could end three decades of lawlessness and anarchy in Somalia.

The new president will be inaugurated on the 9th of June, becoming the first leader to win the presidency twice since independence in 1960. He ruled Somalia between 2012 and 2017.

Leaders from East Africa - Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Uganda who sent troops to Somalia in 2007 to fight Al-Shabaab are expected to attend his inauguration in Mogadishu.
