The ISIS affiliate formed in 2015 has been gaining control in Puntland’s Bari region, setting up hideouts in the Golis hills, where it sometimes engaged in deadly battles with the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab.
BOSSASO, Somalia – The northeastern Somali state of Puntland said on Sunday a "significant" number of Islamic State militants had been killed during a 48-hour operation in the coastal Bari province.
In a statement, Puntland Security Forces [PSF] announced that the successful crackdown inflicted heavy casualties on ISIS, killing more than 24 members in the Al-Miskaat Mountains near Bosaso town.
PSF also said they have intercepted two vehicles laden with explosives aimed to carry out an attack and then detonated them at a safe location after overrunning the base of the Islamic State-linked terrorists.
“The target was a terrorist base used to store heavy ammunition & materials to make IEDs. It also served as the base of key ISIS members,” said PSF in the statement posted on its Facebook and Twitter.
There were no immediate comments from ISIS on the PSF claims.
