Qatar pours cash into Somalia to fund Farmajo’s re-election

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A small chartered aircraft carrying millions of US dollars in suitcases has landed at Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu ahead of the election, Keydmedia has learned.

Diplomatic sources told Keydmedia that the money was brought in the country by Fahad Yasin, the former Intelligence chief and current national security advisor to Farmajo and three other officials.

Qatar sent the cash to support Farmajo’s re-election campaign and buy votes of the MPs during the presidential ballot which he will face stiff competition from heavyweight candidates in the tough race.

“In the last 4 years, Qatar has supported Farmajo & his co with money that didn't come through government accounts. The cash was used to destroy Somalia,” said Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame.

The opposition candidate added that the Somali people deserve an apology from Qatar’s ministry of foreign affairs. He further said Doha chose Farmajo over Somalia and he will not succeed in the election.

Qatar has had political influence in Somalia’s politics during Farmajo's four-year presidency, successfully expelling the United Arab Emirates [UAE] from the country, using its man in Mogadishu, Fahad Yasin.

Farmajo sided with Qatar when Saudi Arabia and the UAE cut ties with the Gulf nation for allegedly sponsoring terrorism. He took the decision to please Doha since it funded his 8th Feb. 2017 election.
