MOGADISHU, Somalia - A roadside bomb struck a military convoy in central Somalia, killing at least two soldiers and wounding seven others, police and an administrative official said.

The attack was targeted regional troops returning from a military operation while traveling in a semi-forest area between El-Dheer and Dhusamareb, Galmudug state capital on Friday.

We lost two gallant soldiers in the terrorist attack and seven others sustained wounds, some are in critical condition who are expected to be airlifted to Mogadishu,” said a police officer.

There was no statement from Galmudug regarding the bomb explosion as Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility, claiming it killed at least 15 soldiers serving in the state army.

Al-Shabaab has stepped up attacks in Somalia, mainly in Galmudug, taking advantage of the absence of Ahlu Sunna, an armed moderate Sufi group from the battlefields for two years.

On Friday, the terrorist group attacked Bahdo area near Adado town to show its muscle to carry out hit-and-run assaults in the government-held territories in the Horn of Africa nation.

Galmudug is the scene of a long-running insurgency by Al-Shabaab for years and staged deadly attacks on civilians and military targets to press their insurgency to regain control.
