Shock as Gunmen kill pregnant mothers in Somali capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali police launched an investigation into the killing of three women by suspected Al-Shabaab assassins on Sunday morning in Mogadishu's northern Daynile district.

The women, including two heavily pregnant, were accosted by pistol-wielding men and killed them on the spot as they boarded a Tuk-Tuk from home on their way to work at the Somali Ministry of Defense.

The gunmen fled the crime scene following the shooting before the arrival of the security forces who moved the bodies to the Somali national army [SNA] hospital, where they have been laid to rest on Sunday.

The murder of the mothers has sent shock waves among residents of the restive area, who called on the Somali police to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice immediately.

"Somali police probes the killing of three women this morning, including two pregnant by militants believed to be terrorists, we will not leave a stone unturned to bring the killers to justice,” police said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the ruthless killing, but police pointed the finger of the blame at Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda’s ally in East Africa which is trying to topple the Somali government in Mogadishu.

On Saturday morning, a car bomb killed at least two near the Somali presidential palace in Mogadishu, the latest in a string of terrorist incidents in the country amid an electoral dispute between political leaders.
