MOGADISHU, Somalia - A Somali military official says a number of Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and multiple others wounded in a fresh gunfight that erupted in the Bakool region, south of the Horn of Africa country.
Major Mohamed Nur, the commander of the army’s 260th battalion confirmed to Keydmedia Online by phone that the battle came after they launched an offensive against Al-Shabaab base near Wajid town.
“Today, we carried out a successful operation in several areas located on the outskirts of Wajid that left many terrorists dead and our gallant soldiers are in full control of all locations,” said Nur.
He added that the armed forces will continue hunting down Al-Shabaab militants until they liberate the entire region which suffered the longest blockade since the government captured the main towns in 2014.
Separately, SNA's infantry commander Gen Bihi announced a final assault to dislodge Al-Shabaab from the Mudug region, central Somalia after taking control of Ba'adweyne, Qay'ad, Amara, and other small areas for the past few weeks following battles.
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia is the greatest threat to security and it has conducted high-profile attacks in neighboring countries, mainly Kenya in the past 10 years.
Strong AU forces and their local Somali partners have driven Al-Shabaab out of key strongholds, including Mogadishu in 2011 and nearby districts to allow the government controls the country.
