Somali army claims victory in battle with Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia -  Somalia's military has claimed a major victory on Tuesday in its two-day-long battle with the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militants in the south of the country.

Speaking to the reporters in Mogadishu, army spokesman Colonel Ali Hashi Abdi confirmed that the ongoing offensive in the Middle Shabelle region has led to the death of many militants on the battlefield.

Hashi said the fighting between Al-Shabaab and Somali troops which entered its second day is ongoing in Warahley, Ali Fooldheere, and Qurac-Madobe, semi-forest areas located on the outskirts of Jowhar.

“At least 17 combatants from Al-Shabaab, the anti-peace group. The battle is currently underway and the army is committed to liberating the terrorists from the entire country,” said Col Ali Hashi.

Continuing, the SNA spokesman added that they seized a large cache of weapons during the combat and have fired mortar shells at Al-Shabaab hideouts in the jungle.

The people in Al-Shabaab-controlled areas were alerted to stay away from the target of the army to avoid civilian casualties resulting from the raging mortar and artillery shelling.

The fighting comes as Somalia is heading to the polling stations next month to pick new parliament and president despite numerous challenges, including political turmoil and security threats posed by Al-Shabaab.
