Somali army drives out militants from main areas

HUDUR, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) has on Wednesday began a major operation in Hudur, the capital of the Bakol region against the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group.

The troops drove out the extremists from Gomor, Aboore, Banjina, and Doonful areas near the Hudur district during the military offensive aimed to ensure the security of the border region.

The SNA commanders in Southwest State say the government forces had been advancing further towards Al-Shabaab bases near the Ethiopian border in the northwestern part of Somalia.

Al-Shabaab attacked Somali and AU military bases in Hudur on several previous occasions, and the military officials said the operation was in response to the hit-and-run terrorist incidents.

Al-Shabaab lost control of large swathes of territory in the south and central regions to the SNA and AMISOM but the group was still capable of staging car bombings and assassinations.
