Somali army kills explosives expert in raid

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The U.S.-trained Somali special forces from the Danab brigade have killed a senior explosives expert of the Al-Shabaab militant group in a covert military operation in the south of the country.

The bomb-maker whose name has not yet been identified was reportedly killed in a raid by Danab forces in Bula-haji area near Janale, a newly liberated town in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday afternoon.

The ground operation was executed following a tip-off from local residents about the presence of the terrorist commander and his fellow militants in a base, where they were orchestrating a terror attack.

It remains unclear whether the operations have had a significant impact on terrorist capabilities in the conflict-riddled region, where the U.S. runs a drone base to launch airstrikes against Al-Shabaab terrorists.

The killing of the IED expert comes amid an increase in operations by Somali and AU forces in southern parts of the country in recent months targeting Islamist militant groups in their hideouts.

Dozens of suspected militants have been killed in targeted operations in the country since the assault was launched to liberate the areas still remained under Al-Shabaab control.
