Somali army retakes Al-Shabaab-held town as fresh offensive rages

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Galmudug security ministry said that Somali forces along with regional soldiers have taken full control of Qaycad area in the Mudug region following days of battle against Al-Shabaab.

"Al-Shabaab has suffered heavy casualties at the hands of the allied forces. The previous day, US forces carried out an airstrike against the group in the region that killed 50 militants,” said an SNA official.

For more than two weeks, operations aimed at chasing the terrorists from their remaining pockets have been underway in the southern Mudug region with the troops gaining control of several strategic towns.

The massive offensive is led by the Commander of the SNA’s ground forces General Bihi, Galmudug Security Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, and former Benadir Regional Police Commander Sadak John.

Galmudug state president Ahmed Abdi Karie Qor-Qor has hailed the liberation of the new ground from Al-Shabaab and lauded the troops for their relentless and heroinic efforts to eliminate the terrorists.

The offensive was launched following a deadly car bomb and gun attack at an army base in the Wisil area by Al-Shabaab which killed dozens of Somali soldiers last month.

Al-Shabaab has vowed to disrupt upcoming Somalia’s election by issuing a death threat to clan elders expected to elect the members of the new parliament.
