Somalia says ban on Khat import still remains in place

According to the statement, the import of Khat without validation is not just illegal trade but a violation of Somalia’s Airspace.

MOGADISHU, Somalia -The Somali Civil Aviation Agency said in a statment that Kenya’s Khat known as Miraa still remains banned from the country as the government did not officially lift the embargo placed on it.

The Aviation Agency has informed those seeking to make room for the arrival of the Miraa to stay away from getting involved in that national matter unless proven right to import in. According to the statment the two nations are yet to discuss the banning of Khat from arriving in Somalia. 

The neighboring states have solely restored their bilateral ties,” reads the statement. “With many things still to engage in talks, we call on Khat traders and vendors to remain calm and look forward to what the government has to say.”

According to the statement, the importation of Khat without validation is not just illegal trade but a violation of Somalia’s Airspace.

The deputy chief of staff of Villa Somalia, Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed has backed up the statement issued by the Aviation Authority saying that the restoration of the Kenya-Somali relationship is solely limited to diplomatic ties in a post he published on his Facebook account.

He added that ‘the cooperation and trade ties between the two can only be attained to negotiate based on mutual interests where they can benefit from one another.
