BOSSASO, Somalia - Seventeen Somali nationals, jailed in Oman for 12 years over alleged piracy activities Sunday arrived in the port town of Bossaso of the Bari region, northern Somalia’s Puntland State, soon after their release.

Abdulkadir Jama Dirir, Police Commander in Bossaso town said the Somali embassy in Oman facilitated the release and repatriation of seventeen former prisoners

“We received and welcomed 17 Somali nationals who took 12 jail terms in Oman here in Bosaso town in Bari region this morning. There are 12 other prisoners still in Oman, we are happy to see them return home safely,” Dirir told journalists.

He added that some of the returnees were sentenced to a life term in jail, but efforts made by Somalia’s embassy paved the way for the Oman government to pardon and release the prisoners.

The majority of the returnees were excited about the return to their homeland after lengthy confinement over alleged involvement in piracy.

“We are very much happy to return to our homeland safely after 12 years in prison. We thank everyone who contributed to our release,” a returnee remarked during an interview with local media.
