Somali PM calls on Federal States to hold transparent election

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The prime minister of Somalia Mohamed Hussein Roble held a virtual meeting with the leaders of the Federal States amid growing concerns over electoral fraud.

During the e-forum, the PM urged the leaders of the five regional states to ensure the election is free and fair as well as maintain transparency according to the September 17 electoral deal.

PM’s office said in a statement on Monday that Roble is committed to fixing the complaints by the opposition about alleged vote-rigging and irregularities in the parliamentary ballot.

The Candidates, who met with the PM on Sunday, lamented the electoral process, saying they are not satisfied with the way the election teams are conducting the electoral process.

After failing universal suffrage, Somalia is holding an indirect election, whereas clan delegates pick their MPs in the parliament, a system that is largely marred by bribery and corruption.

The Federal and State leaders are accused of hijacking the electoral process in an attempt to produce pro-Farmajo lawmakers to help the current government win re-election in 2022.

The union of the presidential candidates announced they will not accept the result of the ongoing election in Somalia, a statement that led the PM to convene an emergency meeting.

The international community called for transparency and credible elections to avoid post-election violence in the country which is prone to conflict due to a lack of strong government.
