Somali PM holds e-meeting with regional leaders to evaluate election

MOGADISHU, Somalia - PM Roble chaired on Wednesday night a meeting with Somali leaders at the state level via ZOOM to review the process of the ongoing Senate election after the country failed to hold the polls on the schedule.

The Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) chair Mohamed Hassan Irro briefed the leaders on the progress made in the election and the challenges that emerged ahead of the Lower House polls.

The talks come amid escalating political tension between the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and the PM that resulted from the murder of Ikran Tahlil, the senior NISA officer.

Uncertainty looms large in Somalia as the Federal Government and its member states prepare for the election of the 275-seat House of the People, which is set to take place by the end of this year.

After months of electoral stalemate, the leaders inked the May 27 Pact in Mogadishu which allows the country to hold an indirect election after Farmajo failed to deliver his promise for universal suffrage.

As the country still practices the clan-based power-sharing model, 101 delegates will elect each MP in the Lower House meaning 27,775 delegates will participate in the election of the 275 lawmakers.

The 54 Senate seats are elected by the regional parliaments in Garowe, Dhusamareb, Jowhar, Baidoa, Kismayo, and Mogadishu. Both houses will pick a new president in a joint session.
