Somali PM takes important Steps to Demilitarize Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The caretaker of Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble's government has taken an important step to demilitarize Mogadishu following clashes over Farmajo's term extension.

A 10-point pact was reached during a meeting on Wednesday afternoon by the technical committee appointed by Roble on Tuesday with the attendance of ex-presidents, candidates, and two regional leaders.

The summit which took place at the residence of Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Karie [Qoorqoor] in the capital was agreed all the forces battled against term extension to send back to their military bases.

The soldiers who seized key villages in the vicinity of the statehouse in Mogadishu during last week clashes with pro-government troops will be driven out of the city within 48 hours starting from May 5.

The peace deal was greatly welcomed by both opposition candidates and the international community as a step in the right direction and could help the country hold peaceful elections this year.

"I welcome the agreement on the violence that resulted from the illegal extension, and I call for the armed forces should not be politicized and return to their camps,” said former President Sheikh Sharif.

Among the points in the deal include that the rights of the forces, such as their salaries and ranks should not be suspended and face no punishment as a result of their role in the violence in Mogadishu.
