Somali president visits Egypt at invitation of el-Sisi

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali president arrived in Egypt on Sunday for an official visit and will hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, his office said.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud left Mogadishu for Cairo at the invitation of El-Sisi. The two leaders are expected to hold talks on the bilateral relations between Somalia and Egypt, two Arab league states.

The trip to Egypt marks the 7th overseas and Horn of Africa visit by Mohamud, who is in office for less than two months. Villa Somalia said the president is seeking closer ties with the countries.

The president has previously paid visits to UAE, Turkey, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, and Tanzania as PM Hamza Abdi Barre is yet to name his cabinet ministers in 70 days.

Somalia wants continued support from the international partners in reforming its security and the economy as well as rebuilding its army to defeat Al-Qaeda, the Al-Qaeda's East Africa branch.

As president Hassan Sheikh on frequent foreign travels, more than 7 million Somali people are on the brink of famine after a drought that affected most of the country with no outside assistance.
