Somali, African union forces conduct security operations in Afgoye town

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Somali and African Union troops have launched door-to-door search operations in some localities in Afgoye town, captured on Friday from Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabab fighters, without major resistance, Keydmedia reports.

According to local residents who spoke with Keydmedia English News correspondent in the capital, told that Many AU and Somali forces were seen early this morning in the district, where they are conducting search operations targeting residential houses, to find out Al shabab remnants or sympathizers.

Movement of the transport and people using the main road links the tow to Mogadishu has been interrupted as the operations continued there. Several people were arrested during the crackdown in connection with defeated Al shabab militants.

This operation came after on Friday Columns of AU and Somali troops backed by tanks launched the long-awaited attack on Afgoye district four days ago, marching northwest 30km from the capital Mogadishu to the town, an area crowded with locally displaced people (IDPs).

The situation has returned calm and people started their daily life activities after four-days of heavy fighting between Somali forces backed by AMISIOM and Al shabab rebels in militant-held areas, on outskirts of Mogadishu.
