Somali, AMISOM forces take over a key town from Al shabab

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Somali soldiers backed by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces have on Tuesday taken over Bal’ad district, after Al shabab militant group moved out on Monday night, Keydmedia reports.

Somali army commanders said the collation forces have rolled into the town on Tuesday morning without facing much resistance from Al shabab fighters, who had been in full control in the past three-years.

“Somali and AMISOM troops have peacefully seized the town,” a resident said. A great cheer went up from the local residents as soon as Al shabab fighters went out from the district last night.”

The seizure of Bal’ad district is the second major below to the Al Qaeda linked Al shabab militants in less than a week.

Bal’ad district locates about 37 kilometers (23 miles) northeast of Mogadishu, and it was one of the most strategic area for Al shabab fighters before it fell to Somali and AU forces on Tuesday 26 June, 20122.
