Local residents confirmed to Keydmedia English News via phone that the attack forced the militants to flee from their fixed positions in the town before the allied Somali and AU troops rolled in without and resistance or combat.

AU and Somali troops have made significant gains in past three-days against the Al-Shabab militants, capturing key areas along Afgoye corridor

Meanwhile, the AU and Somali forces began digging defensive bases in and around Afgoye town, to keep away from counter-attacks by Al shabab fighters, according to witnesses. This is the first district captured from Al shabab since the start of ‘Operation free Shabelle’ last Tuesday.

According to the AMISOM spokesperson, the AU troops suffered three casualties, one of whom was seriously wounded. He said this didn’t deter them from their objective of liberating up to 400,000 IDPs in Afgoye district, northwest of Somalia’s conflict-ridden Mogadishu.
