The people of Somalia have celebrated their Independence Day both at home and abroad with the political leaders promising to unite again the country and resume dialogue with the Somaliland region.

Somalia Marks 62 Years of Independence Amid deep divisions and Challenges

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia is celebrating its 62nd Independence Day on Sunday, June 26 as the country faces ample challenges, including political division, insecurity, and the worst drought in 40 years.

The main streets in the capital, Mogadishu on the Indian ocean were packed with cheering youths dressed in the blue and white – colors of the Somali flag and also gathered at Daljirka Dahsoon (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), to sing the national anthem.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other top government leaders, including PM Hamza Abdi Barre and House speaker Aden Madobe congratulated the people on the occasion of Independence Day.

The leaders have urged Somalis to work closely together in rebuilding a great and prosperous Somalia after three decades of bloody conflict, piracy, terrorism, and political crisis that ruined the state-building.

Somalia's northern regions took independence from Britain on this day, June 26 in 1960.

Independence Day was also observed last night in Somaliland, a region the north of Somalia which claimed seceded from Somalia on May 18, 1991, and has so far not won international recognition.

The Somalis showed resilience and determination that has kept the national flame alive and working to walk out of ashes and work how to move the country towards a future of peace and prosperity.

Soomaaliya ha noolaato, Long live Somalia, said President Hassan Sheikh in his message on the occasion.

Somalia has been without a functioning strong government since 1991, but now the new leader promises to hold a popular vote in four years and make the country peace with itself and the world.
