Somalia PM in talks with opposition to end electoral crisis

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Outgoing Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble is holding crucial talks for the second time in a week with opposition candidates at the Decale Hotel inside Mogadishu Airport.

The meeting co-organized by Galmudug and HirShabelle leaders saw the attendance of 15 opposition candidates, including ex-presidents Sheikh Sharif and Hassan Sheikh, along with former PM Khaire.

Roble's office said the summit was to finalize an agreement signed between the government and the opposition on Febuary 25 in Mogadishu, which included the participation of candidates in election talks.

Roble, who has no executive power, is said to be reluctant to accept some of the opposition's demands, but he is trying to resolve the ongoing dispute over the country's electoral process.

The opposition postponed a big anti-government rally last Friday after meeting the Roble, who assured his government will allow the candidates to hold a peaceful protest against delayed poll in the capital.

Somalia has failed to hold a timely election at the end of the four-year term of Farmajo on February 8, plaguing the country into further political turmoil and uncertainty that risks the recent gains in security.

The political leaders are in deadlock over the election as Al-Qaeda-linked terror group Al-Shabaab poses threat to Somali security and carrying out deadly attacks in Mogadishu, which houses the UN-backed government and western diplomatic missions.
