Somalia rejects AU report blaming Farmajo for leadership failure

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has termed “baseless and misleading” a report by an AU assessment team last May that accused the outgoing president of leadership failure.

On Saturday, an inter-ministerial meeting was held in Mogadishu in which the officials have announced they will release a formal statement in response to the bombshell report that shocked the Villa Somalia.

The report was issued following the 994th meeting held on 11 May 2021 on the current situation in Somalia and the implementation of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM)’s mandate.

The AU has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Somalia, particularly in Mogadishu, resulting from the electoral impasse, as well as the lingering threat posed by Al-Shabaab.

AU Independent Assessment Team report says Farmajo’s four years in office ended up in political chaos and an election dispute that led to violence in Mogadishu in April and a risk of a return to the civil war.

The political crisis split the Somali National Army along the clan lines that undermined efforts to hold timely and inclusive elections in Somalia and affected the transition plan that AMISOM to hand over to security responsibility to SNA by the end of 2021.
