Somalia shows solidarity with China amid tension with US

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Amid the simmering US-China tension that is on the brink of war, Somalia has expressed full solidarity with Beijing in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement, the ministry of foreign affairs the Horn of Africa country reiterates its resolute support for China's sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.

China and US ties have greatly worsened after US house of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial Taiwan visit that drew threats of reprisals from Beijing which launched the biggest military drills in decades.

For many years, Taiwan has been living under constant threat of being seized by China, which views the self-ruled island as part of its territory to be taken by force if necessary. 

Somalia has called for adherence to relevant United Nations and African Union resolutions.

The Federal Government of Somalia declares its full solidarity with the People's Republic of China in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity while affirming its firm position to respect the one-China policy, considering Taiwan an inalienable part of China's territory,” reads the statement in part.

Somalia has long-standing relations with China, where cooperation between the two friendly countries is distinguished in the political, economic, and development fields of common benefit, in addition to the joint coordination of positions in regional and international forums.
