Somalia government executes a soldier over killing in Gedo region

KISMAYU, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Reports reaching us from Somalia’s southern town of Garbaharey indicate that Somali government forces shot at close range to execute a former soldier over killing his colleague in the army, Keydmedia reports.

Mohammed Abdikalil, the governor of Gedo province for Somali government told reporters after the shooting event that the executed TFG soldier on Sunday afternoon has previously killed intentionally another soldier in the region, making the first such execution in the region.

“Yesterday afternoon, we carried out an execution action against a red-handed TFG soldier called Ismail Diriye at square in Garbaharey town over killing Hassan Abdiweli his colleague in the army in accordance with the laws of Islam and our military court, and this move is meant to terminate the repeated murder in Somali government troops in Gedo region,” said the governor.

Dozens of people watched soldiers open fire at the two soldiers, identified as Ismail Diriye, who had been blindfolded and tied to two poles, witnesses said.

Mr. Kalil also emphasized that they will serve a good example to all government forces, which should ensure reliable peace. This is to avoid killings and to safeguard our Somali people.  He added any soldier who kills a person or loots property of the people will be executed likewise.
