Somalia’s foreign minister escapes an “assassination” attempt

GALKAYO, Somalia – The minister of foreign affairs Abdisaid Muse has narrowly escaped unhurt from an apparent attempt on his life in northern Galkayo under Puntland on Thursday evening.

The minister and his family came under attack from Puntland soldiers during an Iftar dinner hosted by an elder – Yasin Abdisamad under the orders of Mudug regional police commander Mumin Abdi Shire.

At least one soldier who was a member of the security team of the minister was killed and another sustained wounds. The attack raged on for about 15 minutes, according to Muse.

Our security forces foiled the politically motivated assassination attempt. Unfortunately, one soldier has sadly been killed with another injured. The elder was seriously hurt and now in hospital, he said.

The minister who is a close ally of Farmajo having been served as his security advisor said he arrived in the city on Wednesday to spend time with his family during the last days of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

I strongly condemn the violence as means to pollical ends and will hold all involved accountable by all means necessary,' the minister has tweeted.

Puntland’s vice president Ahmed Karash has condemned the attack on the minister and said an investigation was launched to determine the motive behind the deadly incident in the fragile Galkayo city.
