MOGADISHU, Somalia - The new prime minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre has on Tuesday took the office less than 2 weeks after he was chosen by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In a ceremony in the capital Mogadishu attended by ministers, lawmakers, and speakers of the two houses of parliament, former PM Mohamed Hussein Roble handed over the power to Hamza.

“It is a good step forward for our country. We are seeing here a peaceful transfer of power today,” said the new PM in his speech at the event, thanking Roble for holding the elections.

Hamza said Somalia has witnessed more than a year and a half of political tiffs over the delayed elections that polarized the country's citizens and sow divisions among the top Govt leaders.

Mohamud, who served as the 8th president between 2012 and 2017, was elected again on May 15 after defeating Farmajo, who remained in the office for more than a year beyond his term.

The new leaders promised they will lead to the consolidation of peace and stability in the long-chaotic country which is important for holding the first popular election for over 50 years.
