MOGADISHU, Somalia - The newly elected Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to embark on a state visit to Turkey on Sunday, sources confirmed.
Mohamud who is accompanied by top officials, including advisors, ministers, and lawmakers is due to fly to Mogadishu Airport on a Turkish Airlines plane to Ankara today.
He is scheduled to meet with Erdogan who invited him to Ankara for talks on the bilateral relations between Somalia and Turkey.
Ankara is a key partner of Somalia as it helps the Horn of Africa nation in army rebuilding and carries out development projects in Mogadishu.
The overseas trip becomes the second by the president since his inauguration in late last month as the 10th head of state comes as over 7 million Somalis go hungry and are on the brink of famine due to ongoing severe drought.
Last week, he paid his maiden visit to the UAE, where he held talks with his counterpart Mohamed Bin Zayed as Abu Dhabi seeks strong influence in Somalia and overtakes its rival Qatar.
