HARGEISA - Police in Somalia’s northern breakaway region of Somaliland has arrested a veteran journalist Aden Abdi Eidle Hargeisa city at around 2:00 am last night, a media colleague confirmed.
Aden’s arrest came after he recently posted a video on his Facebook page, accusing Somaliland officials of barring him from his job in the local media without providing further details on the reason.
Speaking to the reporters before he was taken into custody, Aden said that the governor of the Central Bank of Somaliland, Ali Ibrahim Baghdadi was behind the issuance of his arrest warrant.
It is not yet clear why the governor worked on the journalist’s arrest. Somaliland government has not commented on the arrest of the correspondent which is the latest in a string of cases of media suppression.
Somaliland continues a clampdown on media workers and people deemed against its claims of being a sovereign state despite a lack of recognization from the world since 1991.
