Somaliland judge survives assassination attempt

HARGEISA, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Authorities in the self-declared Somaliland say, unknown assailants have on Monday shot and injured The head of the judicial court of Hargeisa Abdirashid Duraan, Keydmedia reports.

Assailants armed with pistols shot the judge in the head at dawn as he left a mosque near his house, after performing morning prayers in the neighborhood of New Hargeisa. The attackers managed to escape from the shooting site.

Security forces under Somaliland reached the scene and conducted search operations to find out the criminals, but witnesses said no arrests were made for the shooting so far.

Abdirashid Duraan, the victim was rushed to Hargeisa’s General hospital, where doctors were pessimistic about his recovery of the judge, despite being shot in the head.

The latest reports said the wounded judge was later flown to neighboring Djibouti for proper treatment.

The motive of the attack was yet determined ,but some reports indicate that the shooting might be connected to recent corruption cases where Judge Duran gave twelve people prison terms ranging from one to eight years for their roles in misappropriation of food aid.

Those found guilty included three former officials who received jail terms of one year to three years.
