MOGADISHU, Somalia - The outgoing Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi and Deputy PM Mahdi Guledsubmitted a list of candidates for the Somaliland Upper House Seats to PM Roble.
The election of Somaliland seats in the upcoming Somali Senate is the last, with most of the other regional states picked their senators as the country gears up for the Lower House vote.
Abdi Hashi and Mahdi Guled were embroiled in a bitter dispute over control of the Somaliland ballot as Villa Somalia was trying to block the Senate speaker from running again.
The top leaders have last week reached an agreement over their differences and promised to work together in holding a smooth, free and fair election with the support of the PM's office.
The released list of 24 candidates will compete for 11 seats. Only Abdi Hashi is the lone candidate for the first seat with no rival contender. He was cleared to easily retain his seat.
No new date was set for the election of Somaliland's upper house seats which will happen in Mogadishu as the breakaway region claims to be an independent country, not part of Somalia.
Despite repeated delays, the Federal Election Implementation Team [FIET] said the polls are still on track, but moving slowly due to the political standoff between Farmajo and PM Roble.
