Third MP dies from Covid-19 in Somalia

KISMAYO, Somalia - Abdi Hassan Hiish who was a member of the Jubbaland Parliament has died from Covid-19 on Thursday morning in the southern Somali port city of Kismayo, Lower Juba regional capital.

The long-serving regional lawmaker has been battling against Covid-19 for the past few days since he tested positive for the disease.

Jubbaland leader, Ahmed Madobe who is currently in Mogadishu for election talks has extended his condolence to the family and friends of the MP, who was one of the founding fathers of his admin.

Hiish is the third member of parliament who died from Covid-19 within this month in the country with the disease hitting severely among the elderly people whose immune system can’t withstand the virus.

The war-torn country has lost 392 people since 2020 to Coronavirus with some cases often go underreported which makes the number more than the figures reseated by the health ministry.

The few hospitals in Somalia, mainly in the capital that are treating the Covid-19 patients have run out of oxygen and ICU beds are not enough and the government has failed to keep the health system from total collapse.

The country began the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, March 17 after receiving the first batch of 300,000 Oxford-AstraZeneca, a landmark step in the fight against the virus.
