NAIROBI, Kenya - The United Nations Special Representative for Somalia James Swan has met with Kenyan Defense Secretary Monica Juma in the capital Nairobi on Monday.

At the meeting, the top UN diplomat and Juma discussed the security situation in the Horn of Africa, especially in Somalia, where Kenyan troops are part of a decade-long fight against Al-Shabaab.

Kenya's Defense Secretary said in a statement on her Twitter account that UN Special Representative for Somalia James Swan had exchanged views on ways to strengthen regional security cooperation.

"Received James Swan, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia who paid me a courtesy call at Ulinzi House today [Monday]. We reviewed the security situation in the Horn of Africa & exchanged views on ways to strengthen cooperation for a secure region," she added.

James Swan recently visited some of the most influential Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, seeking support for Somalia in the fields of security and elections.

Swan's visit to Nairobi comes at a time when the diplomatic standoff between Somalia and Kenya has recently been resolved through Qatar mediation.
