US puts pressure on Somali leaders to complete election

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The United States has increased pressure on Somali political leaders to immediately end the continuing delays in the longest country's electoral process.

The US Embassy in Mogadishu has urged the leaders of the five federal states to honor Somali PM's call to conclude the election of the 275-seat Lower House before the end of 2021.

The US said the funds for the election are ready to move forward and complete the election, which took at least one year to end the parliamentary polls that kicked off in July this year.

"Funding is available to complete a significant portion of the House of the People elections, thanks to the candidate registration fees already collected and contributions from #Somalia's partners, including the United States," the embassy tweeted.

Washington has welcomed the conclusion of the Senate polls after Galmudug chose its last two remaining seats on Saturday. Somali leaders failed to hold the timely election this year.

The Federal Electoral Commission (FEIT) has announced that the election of the Lower House chamber will begin on the 16th of this month and will end on the 24th of December 2021.
