World leaders congratulate Somalia on Independence Day

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The UN and several western countries, including the U.S. and Italy congratulated the people and government of Somalia on the 62nd anniversary of their independence.

In a statement, Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State said Biden's administration supports Somalia's efforts to build resilient communities, foster inclusive economic growth, and increase security.

We share the goal of a democratic, prosperous, and peaceful future for your nation. The United States looks forward to continuing its strong partnership with Somalia.

The UN mission in Somalia said it will continue helping Somalia in the struggle to stand on its own feet again after three decades of conflict.

United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia, the Federal Member States, and the people of Somalia in their endeavor to build a more peaceful and prosperous future for their country," said UN envoy James Swan.

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has sent a congratulatory message to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the 62nd Independence anniversary of Somalia.

In confirming that Italy remains alongside Somalia in its path towards peace, stability, and economic and social growth, I hope that the historical ties between our countries and the deep bonds of friendship between our people can be further strengthened. I want to convey, Mr. President, my warmest congratulations on today’s important anniversary,: said Sergio Mattarella.

The UK and other western diplomatic missions based in Mogadishu have sent a similar congratulations to Somalia on its 62nd independence day marked on Friday, 1st July.
