The grim food security situation is unfolding as humanitarian funding from the international community has so far fallen short of coming close to what actors need to avert a famine in the country.

The camps are hosting thousands of people who fled their homes due to threats by the jihadist group Al-Shabaab as well as the devastating drought that is currently affecting many parts of the Horn of Africa region.

Some 6.1 million Somalis have been affected by the drought emergency as of May, according to a recent report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The UN agency said the drought is compounding severe vulnerabilities and humanitarian needs caused by decades of protracted conflict and insecurity, climate shocks, and disease outbreaks.

Rukia Yacoub, deputy director for the World Food Programme in East Africa told the BBC that only 15 percent of its Somalia appeal has been funded and the need is increasing every day.

The country is experiencing the worst drought since the 2011 famine following the failure of three consecutive rainy seasons, resulting in the destruction of livestock and crops.

After rains failed for four consecutive seasons, the worst drought in 40 years has shriveled their beans and maize and dotted scrubland with the corpses of their goats and donkeys.

Half of the population is in need of some form of humanitarian assistance. That is 7.7 million. Amongst those, six million need food assistance. As for those impacted by the drought, they're estimated to be 4.9 million.

Natural disasters -- not conflict -- have in recent years been the main drivers of displacement in Somalia, a war-torn nation that ranks among the world's most vulnerable to climate change.

It said the escalating emergency calls for sustained scaling up of response and flexibility in reprogramming, especially given that weather forecasts are predicting an average to below-average rainy season this month.

 The Boyle IDP camp is one of several camps which have sprung up around the country as desperate people move to locations where they hope they can access help.      

According to the Protection and Return Monitoring Network, about 259,500 people were displaced between October 2016 and February 2017, compared to 572,700 people displaced between October 2021 and February 2022.
