The leader has been holding power for almost 8 years since the establishment of Jubaland.

During his unannounced visit, the head of AFRICOM has held talks with Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe on the war on Al-Shabaab and plans by Washington to resume airstrikes against Al-Shabaab.

This came after Somali leader Farmajo whose term into office expired on Feb. 8 said in his address to the Lower House on Saturday that he dropped his extension to allow the PM to organize federal elections.

In the past, Jubaland voiced its opposition to the presence of the Somali national army forces in the Gedo region and has been calling for their removal to allow Ahmed Madobe to oversee the Garbaharey election.

Somalia is facing uncertainty and divisions following the extension term of outgoing leader Farmajo.

The talks between Swan and Madobe covered the wider political situation in Somalia, including the deadlock over elections amid ongoing efforts to bring the parties together to agree on a way forward.

Gedo region has been the focal point of the conflict between Jubaland led by Ahmed Madobe a close ally of Kenya and President Farmajo whose clan Marehan makes the majority of the local population.

Also, the opposition presidential candidates called for the disbandment of the electoral commission packed with Farmajo allies and members of the National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA].
