The exchange of shelling occurred after the Somali parliament was targeted with mortar shells on Monday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

According to a local resident, Abdifatah Gacmadhere, at least 20 people were killed inside the market in one of the worst shellings which pounded the busy market.

“Those areas that came under artillery attacks include, Bakara, an open-air market in central Mogadishu that is used by militants as military base,” Gacmadhere said.

According to an emergency official, the causalities were mainly caused by shells that landed in the civilian zones.

“Our team assisted several people who were injured by mortar shells, which landed in residential areas, mainly in northern districts,” said Ali Muse, the head of Mogadishu
